Abstract: Normal weight SD rats were used as (i) normal control group, and Obese SD rats were randomly divided into five groups (8 in each group): (ii) obese model group, (iii) sibutramine positive control group, (iv) three Pu-erh tea groups with low-, middle-, and high-level. The rats were given Pu-erh tea by gavage, and the body weights of the rats were measured once a week. The glucose (Glu), insulin, leptin, adiponectin, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), interleukin-1alpha/ beta (IL-1α/β) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels were determined in the serum when each group of rats fasting 24 h were sacrificial after continuous administration over 42 days to observe the influence of Pu-erh tea on weight loss and cytokine profiles. In contrast to the obese control, the weight of the rats decreased by 24.8%, 26.59% and 27.62% (P<0.05), respectively. The levels of three Pu-erh tea’s groups were obviously decreased respectively of Glu 57.3%, 67.1% and 216.7%(P<0.01), LDL-C 7.11%,9.11% and 25.74% (P<0.05), insulin 8.6%,17.2% and41.7%, leptin 68.58%, 66.81% and 64.60%, VEGF 25.0%, 27.8% and 33.3% (P <0.01), and TNF-α 45.3%,44.6%,40.5% (P <0.01). The concentrations of HDL-C were also significantly increased by 20.4%,22.2%,25.0%(P<0.05), adiponectin by 5.9%,7.6%和9.7%(P <0.05). The ratio of IL-1α and IL-1β were modulated. Therefore, Pu-erh tea obviously reduces weight gain and the levels of LDL-C, Glu, insulin, leptin VEGF and TNF-α, while increasing the concentrations of HDL-C and adiponectin. The levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines were elevated, while the inflammatory cytokines were decreased.
