Abstract: The leaf or stem extract from the fragrant plant, Vitex negundo L.var. heterophylla (Franch.)Rehd. occuring in Beijing area, was prepared by supercritical CO2 fluid extraction (SFE) and then analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Through comparison with mass spectra database and their retention indices relative to n-alkanes, total of thirty-five volatile components from the leaf and the stem were identified. They were all of monoterpene or sesquiterpene constituents, with β- caryophyllene the most major, followed by β-methylionone and β-farnesene.

Key words: Vitex negundo L.var. heterophylla (Franch.)Rehd, supercritical CO2 fluid extraction (SFE), volatile constituents, β-caryophyllene, β-methylionone, β-farnesene
