Abstract: The content of total alkaloid in Zanthoxylum nitidum(Roxb.) was determined by bromophenol blue colorimetry, and the UV-visible spectrophometry was adopted to determine the total alkaloid with the wavelength at 393 nm. The total alkaloid is in linear relationship within the concentration range of 2.56～ 10.26μg/ml(r=0.9997), the average recovery rate is 101.00% (RSD=2.46%, n=6). Bromophenol blue colorimetry is simple, quick and accurate in the determination of total alkaloid in ZanthoxyLum nitidum (Roxb.)DC.
