Abstract: Akkermansia muciniphila is a gram-negative and strictly anaerobic bacterium that can specifically degrade mucin in the mucus layer of the gastrointestinal tract. It was firstly isolated from human feces. A. muciniphila plays an important role in promoting the host health in the mucosal interface, which has become a hot spot of intestinal microecology and probiotic recently. This paper emphatically summarized the current genomic information, molecular biological identification, typing and the isolation and purification technologies of A. muciniphila. We explored the merits and demerits of cultivated conditions. In addition, we compared the differences among diverse species in colo-nization so as to analyze the possibility of microbiota transplantation. We hoped to deeply extend the research of mo-lecular mechanism of A. muciniphila with the aim of novel probiotic products development.
