Effect of 1-Methylcyclopropene Treatment on the Antioxidant System of Gynura bicolor DC.

Abstract: The effect of 10 μL/L 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment for 6?h on the antioxidant system of Gynura bicolor DC. (G. bicolor) leaves stored at ambient temperature was examined in this study. The results showed that 1-MCP treatment improved the sensory quality of G. bicolor, inhibited the respiration intensity, suppressed the accumulation of superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide, and maintained the contents of ascorbic acid and glutathione. In addition, 1-MCP treatment upregulated the expression of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes (GbSOD, GbAPX1, GbCAT and GbGR) at different storage times to varying degrees to enhance the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT) and glutathione reductase (GR) thereby improving the antioxidant capacity and delaying the senescence process of G. bicolor leaves. The findings of this study can provide a theoretical basis for further studies.
